A Letter
from the Editor of The Blessing Stone
Dear Reader:
Barbara Wood is an author I'm determined to break out. She's
been published very successfully in Europe but she has yet to become
well known here [North America]. I've been waiting for the right
book to make a splash with and I think THE BLESSING STONE is it.
But first, I want to tell you why I'm so excited. I knew, in concept,
that this was an ambitious book: Barbara intended to write a novel about
the history of the world. So when it arrived on my desk, I looked at
it with trepidation. Did she pull it off? I brought it home, allotted
some time, got comfortable on my couch, and began.
Hours later, I hadn't moved. I was awestruck. The novel begins three
millions years ago with a blue stone breaking off from a meteor and
falling to earth. From there, it follows the stone as it changes hands,
shapes destinies, and becomes the stuff of legends, obsessions, curses,
and myths. From prehistoric Africa, to ancient Israel, to Imperial Rome,
to medieval England, to 16th-century Germany, to colonial Caribbean,
to the American West, to the present day - the stone changes everyone
with whom it comes into contact. And where does the stone end up? I'm
not going to say, but I guarantee you'll never look at any stone
or crystal again without wondering about its history and origin.
