A "Gem" of a Story
With her latest book, "The Blessing Stone"
(St. Martin's Press, $25.95, 464 pp), international best-selling author
Barbara Wood delights the reader with her most ambitious project to date,
the telling of the history of the World in eight chapters. THE BLESSING
STONE, Wood's 19th novel is comprised of eight individual books linked
by a common thread. Each story is set in a different country and
period of time with Wood's trademark attention to detail and inclusion
of historical figures. This backdrop provides a compelling storytelling
in which the varied characters yearn for truth and meaning to their lives,
aided by the mystical powers of the blessing stone.
Book one, set 3 million years ago, details the birth
of the blessing stone when a meteorite crashes to Earth and in the residue
deposits a small blue stone. A million years later, a prehistoric
woman, named "Tall One" discovers the stone in Africa. This
discovery marks the beginning of the stone's global journey as the history
of the World unfolds as the stone passes from generation to generation,
spanning 5 continents from the Jordan River Valley, to ancient Israel,
Imperial Rome, Medieval Europe, the Caribbean and finally to the pioneers
of the American West. The unifying factor between each story is
the stone and what it conveys to its owners. Each character recognizes
something familiar yet unexplained in the stone's core, prompting them
to see hidden truths, alter their beliefs and ultimately shape their destiny.
To coincide with the publication of THE BLESSING STONE
